Always wondered about Japanese woodcuts….water based ink?

TadakoXIII March 9, 2010 at 5:51 pm

sinibaa March 9, 2010 at 6:41 pm

I’ve always wondered about this process, thank you for making this video and sharing your skill.

hey I’m doing some media work for college and i have searched the internet like mad and have not been able to find any advantages and disadvantages of relief printing i was wondering if you could help me or any one could?

DitherSwitch March 9, 2010 at 7:05 pm

The print came out wonderful. I’m a lithographer but I seriously need to go back to relief printing now. I love the subtle look of the Japanese water-based technique.

He pronounced “Hanga to” as if he were saying “Hanga 2″.

Oh, you use the chisel to carve out whatever it is you don’t want colored. For his demo, if he wants those roofs to be red, then he’d carve out everything except the roofs. Some chisels are real tiny that are great for little detail. When you’re done carving you paint on the uncarved areas, plant the paper and press the hell out of it, lol!

It’s time consuming, but it gets fun once you get the swing of it.

very interesting video. I didn’t quite get how the drawing gets cut down per colour but a good watch.

Very nice. Thanks for putting this online — this is what youtube is all about.

coochi6 March 9, 2010 at 11:08 pm

um… sory if this sounds like a stupid question, but can you get splinters from woodblock printing? I dont know much about it, and I need some disadvantages of using it for homework.

jssemi March 9, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Yes, it’s like the modern version of woodblock printing, its softer and easier to cut, however, I have yet to see any of the same quality as some Ukiyo-e I have seen.
