The answer to your query is simple: have a toroidal window placed in the center of your home, with an inside courtyard. Plant a large Linden tree there. Bees will flock to it, and you will be able to observe them, especially when the tree dies, and it becomes a more ideal nest location. Leave it “open air” so the temperature is self-regulated by the bees.

What about ants?

beefygoblin August 19, 2010 at 3:07 am

Now that would look cool. A bee wall highlighted by a waterfall… With a few metal heat sinks on it…perhaps a sheet cut to look like beez… or butterflies (being stung to death).

It would have to be hooked up to a gas powered back up generator too…becouse you can’t have animals relying on the power grid. Thats just cruel.

yea, this wasnt just random, he was asking for ideas.

liquid cooling on a wall is easy, because its a verticle flat.
you would basically make a waterfall, give it a high enough pressure to flow out, and a low enough pressure to let it flow between the wall material (probably another sheet of glass against the bees) the bottom could either collect and recool the water, or redirect it for other purposes, or both, recool some, water the flowers with the rest.

eww, roaches?

but yea, ive always wanted an antfarm wall, i also kinda want an antfarm sink, just because that would be trippy as shit

upplsuckimcool16 August 19, 2010 at 4:11 am

Hey that is a pretty cool idea.

beefygoblin August 19, 2010 at 4:18 am

Wow…baz needs to get a life.

Penn suggests a cool idea and asks for help…and baz basicaly calls him an idiot. Weak.

Does anyone know a liquid coolent method relevent to penns question?

bigbumnutsucker August 19, 2010 at 4:24 am

i always drempt of a wholewall ant farm

Do I have to point out that bees die? You´d end up with dead and dying bees all over your house.
Would last longer with real beehives but you´d still have problems, especially in Vegas :P I read something about a construction that lets you see the bees in a special beehive you could have like a box on the wall. But it´s not that bright.
I guess the news that pollinating insects are dying off or disappearing also didn´t pass by your ears? Cool idea, yes, but hard to sustain for a longer time.

Dejoblue August 19, 2010 at 5:35 am

Cool.

Steve Vai, one of if not THE greatest guitarists alive, is a beekeeper.

Now two cool dudes I respect are into bees.

Hmmmm….

complaining about something meaningless being posted on youtube is like complaining that
Mcdonalds serves hamburgers.

Do you have questions for Penn or topics you would like to hear his opinion on? Please send a message! =)

bracomadar August 19, 2010 at 6:54 am

If they got to be cooled, you could either buy you a vacation home in Alaska and do it there, or maybe put them in a wall in a walk in freezer. Have you considered maybe doing it with an ant farm instead of a bee hive? You probably wouldn’t have to cool them down.

singedrac August 19, 2010 at 7:27 am

Penn Gilette’s been posting random shit to the internet since the mid-80′s. It’s not a new behavior of his.

BazBuzinkum August 19, 2010 at 7:59 am

Why is he telling people this?
See, this is what happens when you let yourself be swayed by the idea that youtube and web 2.0 will somehow increase our relevance; people posting meaningless blather about themselves to fill the void of their own insecurities and fear of being ordinary. What happened Penn? You seemed smarter than this.

Stark1010 August 19, 2010 at 8:18 am

Penn, you are killing me.

1. Cool idea.
2. It’s Vegas!!! Cash is king, pay someone off. Does not matter which city, all Inspectors love cash.
3. Just build it…it’s a wall in your house….who will know. Well, now they do.

kbrinks August 19, 2010 at 8:40 am

Before i even clicked on this video i already assumed that penn had a wall in his house full of bees.. i was let down to find out he hasn’t yet done it :( maybe someday penn

jimcantbob August 19, 2010 at 9:35 am

REOVolkswagon August 19, 2010 at 9:58 am

I’ve always said: ‘beauty’s in the eye of the bee holder.’

makaveli087 August 19, 2010 at 10:41 am

gay. Penn should shut the fuck up and stick to magic w/ Teller.

vcntmnd August 19, 2010 at 10:52 am

If the bees could exit the building it would a safety hazard to neighbors as well as guests (bee stings can be deadly to those with allergies, stock epinephrine) If the hive is enclosed it becomes a heating and cooling problem? Are there laws against contained bees or just open hives? Simple ventilation with mesh screens could keep bees in and let air flow (weather proofed to avoid flooding during rain) with fans, AC or swamp coolers to push air throughout the hive if necessary.

thirdclass2006 August 19, 2010 at 11:44 am

You could try making the said house in the UP of Michigan. No worries about heat.
Or, some forced draft ventilation system could take care of the heat.
Don’t know about the state laws! Maybe a seperate add-on to the house like that.
Personally, I’d be a bit scared to have a colony of stinging bees around.

SnowBlind853 August 19, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I’d rather have an ant colony wall.

NorthernVAMike August 19, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Hey Penn….I’m going to have to side with the city of Las Vegas on this one, sorry man…..uh, what about investing in a honey plant or something? They would be safer and easier…at least one would think

croat88 August 19, 2010 at 1:53 pm
